But while many overseas visitors are drawn by the all-inclusive resorts peppering the north and east coasts, to consider the country as just another palm-fringed beach bolthole is to sell it short.
Capital Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial is rich in remarkable architecture, and makes the most natural starting point for cultural visitors, particularly those who like their music loud: throughout the country, fast-step merengue and guitar-based bachata blare from storefronts and taxis.
The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean country that occupies the eastern two-thirds of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. The western one-third of Hispaniola is occupied by the country of Haiti. To the north lies the North Atlantic Ocean, while the Caribbean Sea lies to the south.

The Dominican Republic is situated on the eastern part of the second-largest island in the Greater Antilles, Hispaniola. It shares the island roughly at a 2:1 ratio with Haiti. The country’s area is reported variously as 48,442 km² (by the embassy in the United States) and 48,730 km² (by the U.S. CIA), ) making it the second largest country in the Antilles, after Cuba. The country’s capital and greatest metropolitan area, Santo Domingo, is located on the southern coast.
There are many small offshore islands and cays that are part of the Dominican territory. The two largest islands near shore are Saona, in the southeast, and Beata, in the southwest. To the north, at distances of 100–200 kilometres (62–124 mi), are three extensive, largely submerged banks, which geographically are a southeast continuation of the Bahamas: Navidad Bank, Silver Bank, and Mouchoir Bank. Navidad Bank and Silver Bank have been officially claimed by the Dominican Republic.
Attractions in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic – is truly a land of contrasts – the physical kind, like the highest peak and the lowest point in the Caribbean, and the more metaphorical kind. Like that between the urban street life of Santo Domingo and the rural villages only a short drive away. Santo Domingo, or La Capital as many do call it – is to Dominicans what New York is to Americans, a collage of cultures; or what Havana is to Cubans, a vibrant beating heart that fuels the entire country. It’s also a living museum, offering the sight of New World firsts scattered around the charming cobblestone streets of the Zona Colonial.
The Dominican Republic is also famous for the large all-inclusive resorts that dominate much of the country’s prime beachfront real estate. However, the result is less like the high-rise congestion of Cancun or Miami and more like low-slung retirement communities, albeit ones populated by families, couples and singles of all ages looking for a hassle-free holiday.
And yes… beyond the gated luxury enclaves, the roads lead inland past vast sugar plantations and through small villages. To get away from the get-away, travelers head to the Península de Samaná, where the European vibe is as strong as an espresso, and where escape is the operative word. Cabarete on the North Coast has winds which draw adrenaline junkies from around the world. And for the anti-Caribbean experience head to the popular mountain retreats of Jarabacoa and Constanza – places where bathing suits are out and sweaters are in.
